The new year is a fresh start to becoming more decisive in life. Then again, I have this trait of being so afraid of making a mistake. It is something that so many of us has in common. We become hesitant and indecisive because we don’t want to be blamed. Failure is not an option. Ever since we were young, we have been trained and drilled time and time again to be perfect and successful. There is the notion that someone is acceptable only when he or she has done things right.
To make things even more difficult, our brains dwell on these embarrassing times more than anything else. For instance, why do I remember nearly failing on my communications course instead of remembering how to draw up a superheterodyne receiver? You might not believe it but this selective memory can be an advantage. Making mistakes can pave the road to success despite what some bosses or professors might tell you.
Even if our knees shake at the thought of screwing up, it’s true that we learn so well from our mistakes. The main reason for this is that we do everything we can do prevent them from happening in the future. It’s practically a basic instinct. So that we can be protected, our brains engrave the memories and mistakes for future reference.
Therefore, if we are faced with the same situation, we will know what to do. We will know what should be done so that we won’t have to make the same mistake.
