Having Mercury Fillings Removed
Oct 20th 2009 · by Catherine Osthaus
About ten months ago I had my first dentist visit in twenty years. My teeth are pretty healthy and no new cavities were found. I have one mercury “silver” filling that I want out. I inquired my dentist about her opinion this filling and she nearly laughed when I told her that I believe that this filling is one of the contributing causes to my Candida yeast and Anxiety/OCD disorder. She said it was a small filling, it was secure and it “looked” pretty good. She said it was not worth taking out but she would do it if I asked her.
I then went to my doctor and inquired about my mercury levels. The test showed that I had mercury in my blood but not in amounts that would be a cause for concern. My Whole blood levels were 9 µg/L and the safe levels are < 8.0 µg/L and for occupational limit in exposed workers < 15.0 µg/L (Source)
So my level is just above the safe level.
So here are my thoughts about mercury:
If health professionals don’t take mercury amalgam poisoning seriously then you need to find another health professional that does.
Why?
- Mercury is toxic even in small amounts. It is the most toxic, non radioactive substance in the world. It is more toxic then lead.
- Mercury passes the blood brain barrier.
- Mercury is attracted to lipids (fats) and the brain has the highest concentration of lipids of any organ.
- Mercury vapour from dental fillings is highly toxic
Watch this startling video on how brushing your teeth can lead to toxic overexposure to mercury just by the dental amalgam vapours. Even drinking hot beverages and soups can leach more mercury into your body then in an undisturbed amalgam. Any kind of stimulation will disturb the mercury to release vapours. Mercury vapours are then released for a minimum 1.5 hrs.
I will be having my fillings removed within the next couple of weeks. I found a holistic dentist that will do this work and I meet him on Sunday. (An odd day for business, but it is the first day of the week) I will meet with him to see if I feel comfortable with him doing such work in my mouth.
I will also start taking supplements to chelate mercury. The supplements include Iodine, Selenium, Cilantro, Chlorella, High dose vitamin C to bowel tolerance. That is a start for now and as I find more info I will add to this list.

I’m doing this myself right now. I’ve been thinking about it for several years, but didn’t actually start until I found out that my dental insurance pays the same for the out-of-network holistic dentist as to they do to the regular guy. AND the holistic dentist isn’t more expensive, which surprised me.
Unfortunately I also have two teeth with root canals topped with metal crowns. They’re about 15 years old and who knows what the metal is? He recommends having them removed also – the entire tooth, I mean. Now we’re talking serious money, so I’m going to have to wait until I can save enough.
Now if my health took a major turn for the better after just the mercury removal, maybe I’d just leave the others alone. We shall see.
Hi Betsy,
Check out this Speech by Dr. Huggins: http://curezone.com/diseases/cancer/cancer_dental_risk.asp
The metal crowns could very well have nickel in them. 75% of crowns contain nickel. Nickel is linked to immune system problems and breast cancer.
Root canals are also very dangerous. Here is what Dr. Huggins said i his speech…
“It doesn’t really matter what you embalm the dead tooth with, it is still dead, and within that dead tooth we have bacteria, and these bacteria are in the absence of oxygen.
In the absence of oxygen most things die except bacteria. They undergo something called a pleomorphic change——like a mutation .. they learn to live in the absence of oxygen-now produce thioethers, some of the strongest poisons on the planet that are not radioactive.”
“Weston Price knew this back in 1920 – he would take a person who had had a heart attack, take out the tooth with the root canal, take a little segment of it, put it under the skin of a rabbit.
We have done this with guinea pigs, and in about 10 days that rabbit would die of a heart attack. And you could take it out and put it under the skin of another rabbit, and in 10 days he would die of a heart attack–he would do this to 30 rabbits and every one of them in 97% of the cases would die of heart disease.”
With all these horrible ingredients that are put in the mouth, I am thinking that maybe tooth extraction is not such a bad idea.

Hi Healthyfitmom, I have also struggled with Candida for over 10 years now. I used to have mild attacks of the occasional yeast infection and then IBS symtoms. But in my second year of college, I had 6 mercury fillings removed all at once and I broke a mercury thermometer (I had no idea of the danger so I did not take any safety percautions when cleaning up the mess so I likely had mercury vapor in the air for at least 6 weeks after the fact). Nor did the dentist use any safety percautions when removing my fillings and I became extremly sick. I could not eat without vomitting for over a month. I had a constant dull ache in my stomach, my candida problems increased exponentially. Ever since then I have battled with so many stomach problems that I finally got tested and found out that I had ulcerative colitis (which I was able to heal through diet and of course the doctor did not believe that was possible so he later changed the diagnosis to IBS). But I have suffered with chronic yeast infections that I have not been able to get rid of through supplements, anti-candida diet, etc. I got pregnant 3 years ago without being educated then on mercury poisoning, and once I was I realized I could not do anything about it until I stopped breastfeeding. I am now breastfeeding my second baby (5 weeks old today). Unfortunately she has thrush too which breaks my heart. However, once I do stop breastfeeding, I will make sure to go to a holistic dentist who is familiar with removing mercury safely (according to the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) http://www.iaomt.org/articles/category_view.asp?intReleaseID=288&catid=30c
and I will follow Andy Culter`s chelation (who is a PhD chemist and has a lot of incredibly fascinating things to say about mercury poisoning). To find a mercury free dentist, see http://www.mercuryfreenow.com/freeservices/find_dentists.html
Also see http://www.noamalgam.com/ to read about Dr. Andy Culter`s work. Another chemist who speaks out against mercury (in vaccines and amalgams) is Dr. Boyd Haley – check him out too (just google him and you will get a ton of hits).
Followers of Andy Cutler`s chelation protocal have a yahoo group too http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/frequent-dose-chelation/?yguid=339956290
Great resource for lots of advice, supplements to take while chelating, etc.
Good luck! I hope we both beat the nasty candida eventally!
Also, if you read through Andy`s website, you will learn why you a hair test and blood test for mercury does not actually provide an accurate portrayal of how mercury poisoned you are. Andy gives rules about interpreting hair tests that will tell you how poisoned you actually are.
HI, You seem to be going to some old fashioned docs and dentists. I have an ortho and a dentist, both remove mercury fillings an no longer use them. Neither are ‘holistic’ dentists. In BC general mercury is accepted as bad. My dentist recommended to me that I have my silver fillings removed and that was done a few years ago. The procedure for removing the mercury is quite elaborate as it is considered toxic waste.I also have root canals that I am dying to have removed but that will be quite pricey so I’m saving my pennies. MY ortho is fine doing that too.
I suffer from Generalized anxiety disorder, anemia, and yeast problems. I think they go hand in hand. I realized the connection between the yeast and iron when I started taking iron supplements because I started feeling much worse! I have also been told that I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, blah, blah, blah. I think its all nutrient deficiencies. If your gut is screwed up you’re screwed up. I have read and hundred books or more on mental health, health, diets, nutrients, on and on. It all come down to the same thing-good digestive health. I have had digestive problems for years, including parasites, and they only get worse with age. I have also been given a ton of antibiotics to get rid of them. I now eat no sugar, stimulants, caffine, avoid msg and food additives, dairy and gluten(unless a special occasion) and half of my problems have diappeared. The rest is yeast.
My doc gave me a pill to take for yeast-Difucan. I haven’t got the nerve up to take it cause I know its going to make me sick for a few days. Most doctors know yeast is a problem, if your’s doesn’t he’s a Moron. I have a lot of digestive problems and have watched my sugar intake and sucked back the Acidophilus for years. I realize now that I will get no where unless I also take stuff to kill off the yeast. My naturopath also has given me 10-undeoclenic (sp) acid to take. Have to try that too.
I have found a little help from antidepressants. They made me want to sleep all the time, and I got fat while on them, but felt better after I quit taking them than before I started them. Most people find that-the side effects are a little rough when your on them but if you can stick it out for a year and go off you will probably feel quite a bit better and be able to face all the things you want to do. It is documented that antidepressants will increase brain synaptic connection, although they really don’t know why, so they do improve your brain functioning. I know from having GAD how hard it is to do anything and my energy was all used up worrying. Now I can face things a little easier, although its still tough, and I am far from well. I think antidepressants are a good crutch to help you through a rough spot but not a cure.
A couple of books I would like to recommend are “The Carbohydrate Specific Diet” by Elaine Gotchell-the bible of digestive disorders, “The Edge Effect” by Eric Braveman, and “The Ultimate Mind Solution” by Mark Hyman. The last two are essential for anyone suffering from a so called “mental” disorder. They show the connection between vitamin and nutrient deficiencies and emotional/mental problems, and these two books contains great surveys and checklists you can fill out yourself to see what Neurotransmitters you may be low on and recommended supplements. All three books recommend GF/CF diets (no dairy or gluten), and no sugar or stimulants.
I take Inositol (amino acid) at night to help me sleep. The only thing that doesn’t make me wig out. Take a very little to start with as can cause diarrehea. Google Inositol as it is very effective in OCD.
Hope this is helpful as I have found your blog and video inspiring. You have convinced me to finally follow through with my yeast cleanup, even though its going to mean a few days in bed. You deserve health and happiness, keep on your journey and follow your gut (sorry for the pun). Blessings, Dixie.
I have had a few fillings, but they were not mercury. I know some of my friends have recently gotten theirs changed out. I know it is a concern. When I think about mercury, I keep remember those thermometers that use to be around. If the glad broke, then all the mercury would flow out. However, as I recall from science in high school and college, mercury is far more lethal in liquid and gas form.
By the way, I work as a virtual assistant of The Healthy Moms ( http://www.thehealthymoms.net ), the site is fairly new and I thought I would drop by some mom related sites to spread the word.
